What We Do

The purpose of MPA is to advance psychology as a science and a profession by contributing to scientific knowledge in psychology; disseminating this knowledge through education of the public as well as MPA’s membership; and applying this knowledge through professional practice to promote health and human welfare.

Advocacy

MPA strives to advance psychology as both a science and a profession, while also promoting equitable and responsible treatment for mental health conditions and concerns within the state.

Education

MPA serves as an educational resource for disseminating knowledge about the mental health needs and concerns in our state through public education and membership engagement.

Promotion

MPA encourages contributing to the scientific knowledge base in psychology and to applying this knowledge through professional practice to promote health and human welfare.

Health Service Provider

Individuals who live in, work in, or have specific affiliations or interests in the State of Mississippi may submit a written application to the MPA Executive Council for membership. To be eligible, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) hold membership or fellowship status in the American Psychological Association, or (b) possess qualifications that are comparable to those required for membership or fellowship in the American Psychological Association and have been duly elected.

Academic Members

This category includes individuals who are employed on a full-time basis within a university environment, specifically in a teaching role, and do not engage in any form of clinical practice.

Early Career Psychologist

This membership level is designed for psychologists who have recently obtained their initial licensure within the last two years. After the initial two-year period, it is possible to enhance your membership level within your account. For further details regarding memberships for early career psychologists, please refer to the following page.

Exempt Members

Members who meet specific criteria will be exempt from paying dues. These criteria include having a minimum tenure of 10 years with the MPA, being 65 years of age or older, no longer actively practicing, being officially declared as totally and permanently disabled, or having attained dues-exempt status with the American Psychological Association.

Associates

Individuals who have a residence, employment, or specific interests in the State of Mississippi and meet one of the following criteria: (a) being Associates of the American Psychological Association, or (b) holding a BA or BS degree with a major (or equivalent) in psychology from a recognized college or university and currently working in a primarily psychological field. (A year of supervised work under appropriate guidance can serve as a viable alternative to completing a college major).

Student Affiliates

This membership includes individuals who, at the time of their election, are either enrolled as graduate students in Psychology at a recognized college or university in Mississippi, or are undergraduate students majoring in Psychology at a recognized college or university in Mississippi. Interns, residents, and post-doctoral fellows are also eligible for the student rate.
